  1. Dear President

I am writing to introduce our organization and propose the arrangement of debating competitions.

The National Unification Advisory Council (NUAC) is a constitutional institution established in accordance with Article 92 of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea. It is a presidential consultative body on the reunification of the Korean peninsula, formulating and implementing policies on democratic and peaceful unification through the consensus of political parties and the public.

NUAC has approximately 19,000 council members in total, with the majority based in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) but 3,600 council members operate throughout 124 countries across the globe including 60 council members in the New Zealand Chapter. Of note, our local chapter council members are all New Zealand residents and/or citizens.

Although the primary objective of our organization is to advise by putting forward requests and to make proposals to the President of the Republic of Korea regarding policy development and the implementation of a peaceful, democratic inter-Korean unification, we also strive to carry out these aims of peace and unification by promoting the same message in our local communities.

As a proud member of New Zealand society and as part of our efforts to spread the message of peace, reconciliation, unity, and solidarity, we wish to contribute towards fostering partnership and connection, albeit on a smaller scale, through organizing debating competitions at New Zealand schools and universities.

Korea is the only country which has been still separated after the effects of the 2nd World War. This separation did not arise from Korean’s own intentions at the time, yet it has remained for more than 75 years.

Now, we hope to listen to other people’s thoughts and ideas regarding Korean reunification. In fact, peace on the Korean peninsula is not a matter that only involves Koreans. We believe this is also a matter that contributes to the idea of peace worldwide and the Korean reunification process could become one of models for resolving various regional conflicts.

Thus, we would like to propose a series of debating competitions, whereby the topic involves peace in Korean peninsula. To generate interest and broaden perspectives, we suggest that each debating group could represent a country which holds interest or relevance to the issues on the Korean peninsula. These could include North Korea, South Korea, the USA, Japan, China, Russia, and New Zealand, to name a few.

We wish that no particular frames or structures should restrict the nature of the debate, as long as it deals with peace on the Korean Peninsula, in order to allow politically unrestrained ideas and perspectives to flourish.

NUAC plans to contribute an award for winning groups which sums to a grand total of NZ$1000.

We believe this topic can make New Zealand students have a wider perspective on global issues and international relationships.

We would be willing to have a meeting with you to discuss these ideas further, and we look forward to hearing from you in near future.

Thank you for your time and attention.

    Yours Faithfully,

    Mijin Kim

    Head of Public Diplomacy Division

National Unification Advisory Council New Zealand Chapter
